Okay, I'm a bad blogger.
The business of getting a daily newspaper on the street every day is still the top priority to me as the editor of The Mercury.
Posting comments to this blog on how that minor miracle occurs is still an afterthought for me. But, I vow to get better.
The thing about a daily newspaper is that it starts from scratch each day -- each and every day. And on Fridays, planning the papers for Saturday, Sunday and Monday all starts from scratch as well. We are fond of reminding newcomers to this business that this is a daily production with the deadlines and energy level inherent in that concept always top of mind.
Add to the business of daily newspaper production the new medium of a Web site, and you can see why some minor details -- like posting to this new blog -- get overlooked.
I'm not even sure if anybody is reading this, but for what it's worth, I'll be writing more often.
Starting tomorrow.

I read the paper (actually several) every day. On Sunday I saw an AP release, it was a photo of several people planting a 10 - 12 foot tree and claiming that the tree would reduce their carbon footprint. Come on editors, look at what you are putting out there. Transplanting from one spot to another does exactly NOTHING to reduce anyone's carbon footprint. If I did my job that poorly I'd be fired.
Madam Editor, welcome to the latest communication media, the blog. And congratulations on moving the Mercury to a web based reading experience.
Technology is changing many aspects of our life. The world wide web, WWW, has opened up, for all who can connect to it, an unlimited opportunity to explore any topic in real time and with anyone similarly connected.
This is the new medium for communication. And the Mercury is to be commended for it's efforts to become a meaningful part of it.
It is a learning experience. And your organization is a for profit enterprise so there has to be a successful busines model to allow your participation to continue. But the future for those who desire knowledge and information in a timely manner is in this medium. The success of the Mercury will be to find the business model that uses your talents and position in the community to maintain your position as the place for local news and commentary.
We all wish you well in your continuing effort to get it right and keep it right for all of us. Keep up your blogging and we are reading what you write.
